Find Help For Whiplash in Chiropractic Care

During a collision the human body can take a beating. Car accidents  - such as rear-end accidents -  can do a number on the neck and back.

Rear-end accidents happen in a flash. And their damage to a car can be anywhere from extensive to relatively minor. But damage to the car is often not their most lasting impact.

Rear-end accidents often cause whiplash. So do sports accidents, physical abuse, and certain falls.

For every 6 million people in low speed rear-end collisions each year, half of these  -  that’s 3 million people - will be injured. Of those, about 1.5 million will have chronic pain.

What’s worse?
About 300,000 of these become disabled, usually due to pain.

The upshot?
Nearly half of all chronic neck pain in America is due to car accidents and most of those are low speed, rear impact collisions.

The simple word is whiplash but the condition is anything but simple.

At Daniels Chiropractic in Racine, Caledonia, and Mt Pleasant we treat the neck and back pain from whiplash and other car accident injuries to the neck and spine.

Do I have whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury to the neck. It is the result of the forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck - much like the cracking of a whip.
Hence, the name “whiplash.”

Your doctor may call “whiplash” a neck sprain or strain.

Whiplash can include injury to intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots.

“The initial injury is due to damage of cervical muscles, ligaments, disks, blood vessels and nerves. The actual injury to soft tissues happens so rapidly that normal protective muscle reflexes cannot respond in time to decrease or prevent the injury,” according to a 2006 case report in the Journal of the American Chiropractic Association.

What does whiplash feel like?

Commonly, whiplash feels like neck pain and stiffness and often difficulty in moving the neck with full motion. Headaches and tenderness in the neck and shoulder area is also common. These symptoms can begin in the first few hours or few days after the accident.

Here’s a full list of what you may experience:

  •    Neck pain and stiffness
  •    Increasing neck pain when moving
  •    Range of motion decrease in the neck
  •    Headaches - particularly starting at the base of the skull
  •    Tenderness and/or pain in the shoulder and upper back or arms
  •    Tingling or numbness in the arms
  •    Fatigue
  •    Dizziness

Secondary systems include:

  •    Difficulty concentrating
  •    Memory problems
  •    Blurred vision
  •    Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  •    Difficulty sleeping
  •     Irritability
  •    Depression

You can tell from these lists that whiplash can be a serious condition that may need more attention.

Will whiplash heal on its own?

If you’ve been in an accident you should see your primary doctor to get checked out. Once you have received immediate care and have ruled out serious injuries, you may still be left with residual aches and pains.

Maybe you’ve been told that whiplash will resolve itself.
The Mayo Clinic says: Most people with whiplash get better within a few weeks by following a treatment plan that includes pain medication and exercise. However, some people have chronic neck pain and other long-lasting complications.

Can a chiropractor help my neck and back pain?

If you have ongoing pain or stiffness our chiropractors at Daniels Chiropractic can help you get better.

After an accident, first see your primary doctor for immediate evaluation. Then, come see us to relieve your pain and prevent future residual problems that can stem from whiplash.

Whiplash can injure bones in the spine and the disks between the bones. There can be damage to ligaments, muscles, and the nerves of the neck.

But, addressing injury to the ligaments, muscles, and nerves of the neck and back is what we do!

Our chiropractors treat neck and back injuries such as whiplash and can help with recovery from soft tissue damage.  In our office we utilize techniques such as spinal manipulation, myofascial release, massage, and other direct and indirect treatments to heal and get to the root of the problem.
